Where did my Lonely Planet Go? ( 2010-08-23 )
Upon receiving this book it was very obvious that the photos are nice but it lacks a serious amount of information. I've been using Lonely Planet books for years and can honestly say this one disappoints me. There is some useful information in this book but not nearly as much as other LP books that I've purchased. This one feels more like just a book of advertisements. This LP is also very unorganized in my opinion. It jumps around a lot and doesn't give much info on the locations. I really hope all LP books are changing to this format. If so I guess I will have to use another source for my worldly travels. Now the important question.....will Amazon refund my money without charging me for return shipping???!!!
Where did our lovely lonely planet old format go? ( 2010-07-27 )
I bought this colored 2010 version of lonely planet and I regret it and wished I have bought the older versions.
I used to read a lonely planet which transmits more feeling and gives more opinions, this colored version is abstract and does not transmit anything.
It is written in big font with too many spaces which make the whole text a resumed one with less information comparing to the generous amount of information found in black and white lonely planet.
We used to read the writer opinion about a hotel or a hostel, in this version they talk using passive form.
Finally, this book is made of shining papers which make the book heavy to be carried all the time.
Pretty but lacks substance ( 2010-07-14 )
I have always favoured Lonely Planet books over others because, they usually focus on CONTENT rather than graphics. This book is entirely glossy, with the entire book being in colour and photos on every page. Whilst attractive, it has lost an enormous amount of its functionality. For example, there is one sentence in the entire book about golf.
I would not recommend this book to others, unless you are looking for an illustrated guide to Thailand.
Love Lonely Planet books - Thailand no exception! ( 2010-07-13 )
Lonely planet makes great books and resources for travel, one of our deep passions, so when this book in Thailand showed up, I had to grab it.
Never been. Have no set plans yet to go. But I have perused through this and know it's a great resource. At first glance and study, I would give it a 5 star.
All about Thailand ( 2010-06-20 )
Discover Thailand has an enormous amount of information and is a great way to do research when planning your trip. It is a comprehensive guide to the whole country. The book isn't that big and could fairly easily be carted around in your shoulder bag, but I think it would be better to peruse it in the hotel room either before or after the days' adventures.
Inside the front cover there are handy reference materials such as symbols, exchange rates, common business hours, telephone information and measurement conversions. The guide is then separated into eight different sections - Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Central Thailand, Northern Thailand, Northeastern Thailand, Southeastern Thailand, Gulf Coast, and Andaman Coast. Each section covers the region's Highlights, Best, and Things You Need to Know. Some sections also have Sights, Activities, Tours, lodging, dining, entertainment and getting around. These sections are preceded by Thailand's top 25 experiences, suggested itineraries and planning your trip (more things you need to know, travel seasons, and an annual calendar of events). There are beautiful color pictures, maps, and helpful tips throughout the book and the final pages have information about Thailand's history, food, religion, activities, climate charts, dangers and scams, modes of transportation and more. The back inside cover even has some basics of the language.
I haven't yet been to Thailand, but I recently got Lonely Planet's guide to Italy, a country I have visited. I was thrilled with the guide to Italy and have every confidence that Discover Thailand is just as comprehensive.
